Sindh Governor Meets Sports Journalists, Pledges Support for Their Rights

The delegation was led by Pakistan Sports Writers Federation (PSWF) Secretary General Muhammad Asghar Azeem. PSWF Vice President Ubaid Awan and Asif Khan also attended the meeting.

Sports Journalists Accreditation of Sindh (SJAS) President Mahmood Riaz, Secretary Mujahid Ali Solangi and other office-bearers were also part of the delegation.

During the meeting, participants discussed issues facing sports journalists. They also exchanged views on professional matters, working conditions and available journalistic facilities.

Governor Hashmi said sports journalists play an important role in highlighting the talent of athletes and Pakistan’s achievements in sports.

He stressed that promoting positive, responsible and high-quality sports journalism is essential alongside the development of sports.

Sports Media Can Inspire Young People

The governor praised the role of sports media in encouraging young people to participate in sports and healthy activities.

He said responsible sports coverage can help create greater public interest in athletics. Moreover, it can motivate younger generations to adopt healthier lifestyles and engage in constructive activities.

Hashmi also assured the delegation that he would raise their concerns at the relevant forums.

SJAS Highlights Welfare Initiatives

SJAS President Mahmood Riaz briefed the governor about welfare initiatives for sports journalists.

He said SJAS sends sports journalists for Umrah every year. In addition, the organisation provides financial assistance to support journalists facing welfare-related needs.

Riaz also requested equal access for Sindh’s sports journalists to financial assistance and other facilities available to their counterparts at the federal level.

PSWF Conducts International Workshops

PSWF Secretary General Muhammad Asghar Azeem highlighted the federation’s professional development programmes.

He said PSWF organises internationally aligned workshops for sports journalists. So far, 12 Pakistani sports journalists have participated in these programmes.

Azeem also raised the case of late sports journalist Qamar Ahmed. He said Ahmed covered more than 700 One-Day International and Test matches and authored several books.

Azeem called for Qamar Ahmed to be awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his contribution to sports journalism.

Governor Assures Journalists of Support

Governor Nihal Hashmi assured the delegation that he would raise the issues of Sindh’s sports journalists at the appropriate forums.

He specifically pledged to address their concerns regarding federal-level facilities and their rightful share in available support.

The meeting highlighted the importance of strengthening sports journalism while improving professional opportunities and welfare support for journalists across Sindh.
