The University of Karachi (KU) has organised a seminar to strengthen mental resilience, self-confidence and personality development among students with disabilities.
Titled “Building a Stronger Me,” the session focused on managing stress, overcoming anxiety and facing everyday challenges. It also encouraged students to recognise their strengths and pursue their ambitions.
The event took place on Tuesday at the Multi-Purpose Building of the Department of Teacher Education. KU organised the seminar under the vision of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Wasim Qazi.
Professor Dr Wasim Qazi said inclusive education remains a key priority for the university. He stressed the need to provide students with disabilities equal opportunities and appropriate facilities.
He described the seminar as an important step towards student welfare. The initiative also aimed to build confidence and help students become independent members of society.
The vice chancellor announced plans to explore business and employment opportunities for these students. He said such efforts could support their economic independence and contribution to national development.

Qazi also highlighted the importance of character, moral values and kindness. He called for mutual respect, care and cooperation across the university community.
He reaffirmed KU’s commitment to providing every student with dignity and a supportive learning environment.
Professor Dr Zi Asma Hanif Khan from KU’s Department of Psychology led the session.
She explained how stress and cognitive overload affect people. She also discussed emotional management, positive thinking and practical ways to build mental resilience.
The session covered gratitude, fatigue reduction and techniques for achieving mental calm. Students also learned how to support peers facing personal difficulties.
Dr Zi Asma Hanif Khan said the university has around 80 students with disabilities. KU invited all of them to participate and collected their interests through an online form.
Organisers selected the topics according to students’ needs and academic schedules. Upcoming examinations also shaped the session’s focus on stress management, confidence and resilience.
The one-day programme used a focus-group format. This allowed students to share experiences and discuss their psychological needs directly.
Participants explored the physical and psychological effects of stress. They also discussed emotional balance and practical steps towards positive change.
A key feature of the seminar was the distribution of certificates printed in Braille for visually impaired students.
Participants welcomed the initiative and described it as a positive experience. They appreciated the opportunity to discuss their psychological needs in a dedicated setting.
Students said the programme supported their personal growth and strengthened their confidence. They also called for more sessions of this kind.
The participants said the seminar encouraged them to trust their abilities and adopt a positive outlook. They expressed confidence in facing academic and social challenges with greater resilience.
The initiative highlighted KU’s efforts to promote inclusion and create a more supportive environment for students with diverse needs.
