Punjab Plans Village Development Pilot in 120 Villages

The Punjab government plans to introduce the Punjab Prosperous Villages Act 2026 and launch a pilot project in 120 villages to improve rural infrastructure and living conditions.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved the initiative at a meeting on Tuesday. Officials briefed her on a plan to transform villages across the province into model settlements.

Village Committees to Oversee Development

The chief minister approved the formation of village committees in consultation with elected public representatives. She also directed officials to prepare an immediate plan for establishing the committees.

Each committee will oversee local development projects. The relevant assistant commissioner will head the committee, while the deputy commissioner will supervise its work and development schemes.

According to the briefing, each committee will include four public representatives and four government officials. The proposed members include a headteacher, a union council secretary and a doctor from a Basic Health Unit or Maryam Nawaz Health Clinic.

Sewerage and Paved Streets Among Key Projects

The village development plan includes sewerage and drainage systems. It also proposes paved streets in every village covered by the initiative.

Maryam Nawaz said her government wanted to transform villages across Punjab into model settlements. She stressed that development benefits should reach rural communities instead of remaining concentrated in major cities.

The chief minister said officials would consult local residents when planning village development schemes. She also called for quality standards and transparency at every stage.

Elected Representatives to Monitor Projects

Maryam Nawaz said members of the provincial assembly and party ticket-holders would oversee development projects in their respective villages.

She expressed confidence that the initiative would improve rural living conditions and promote balanced development across Punjab.

The pilot project will test the village development model in 120 settlements as the provincial government pursues its wider rural development plans.
