Nazimabad Harassment is under police investigation after CCTV and mobile phone videos showed a woman surrounded and harassed by a large crowd outside a music academy in Karachi’s Nazimabad No 3.

The videos, which surfaced days after the July 9 incident, show the woman trying to protect herself with a chair while dozens of people confront her near a roadside tea stall.

Police identified the woman as Ishrat Malik. Officers said she was returning home after attending classes at the music academy when the crowd stopped and harassed her.

According to police, the incident began after a group of local residents entered the academy and accused it of hosting “immoral activities.” Authorities have not independently verified those allegations.

Police registered a first information report (FIR) on the complaint of Shakir Ali, who runs the academy.

Ali said the academy provides training in singing and qawwali. He alleged that on July 9, a man identified as Azmat Shah arrived with two companions and tried to enter the premises.

Ali claimed he denied them entry because they appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants. He alleged the three men forced their way inside after he refused.

According to the FIR, one suspect displayed a firearm before about 10 more people joined the group. The complainant alleged they vandalised the academy, assaulted staff members and threatened to shut down the institution.

Ali also alleged that the attackers injured him during the assault. He said they harassed his wife, Huma, by pulling her clothes and also harassed female students inside the academy.

The FIR states that Ishrat Malik ran out of the academy in panic. The complaint alleges that the main suspect gathered more people from the neighbourhood, and a crowd of nearly 200 people chased her through nearby streets.

The woman eventually took shelter in a nearby apartment building after escaping the crowd. Someone alerted police through the emergency helpline.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Nazimabad said the academy offers qawwali and singing classes. He added that police had not received any complaints about the academy before the incident.

Police have registered a criminal case over the attack on the academy and the alleged harassment of the woman. Investigators have launched an inquiry, but authorities have not announced any arrests.
