Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal produced a strong comeback to win the PSA Sindh Challenger Squash Championship in Karachi. He defeated Abdullah Nawaz in four games during an entertaining 48-minute final at the Jahangir Khan Sports Club.

Abdullah started strongly and took the opening game 11-6. However, Nasir responded with experience and composure. He won the second game 13-11 before dominating the third 11-2.

The fourth game proved more competitive. Nasir held his nerve to win 11-9 and secure the championship after falling behind early in the contest.

Nasir stages impressive comeback

The final initially appeared to be heading Abdullah’s way. He controlled the opening exchanges and built enough momentum to take the first game.

Nasir then changed the rhythm of the match. He fought through a close second game and levelled the contest at one game apiece.

From there, the experienced player gained control. He won the third game comfortably and then completed the comeback in the fourth.

$6,000 prize purse

The tournament featured a total prize purse of $6,000.

Nasir collected $950 and a trophy for winning the championship. Abdullah received $600 and a trophy as the runner-up.

Former world champion Jahangir Khan and Zubair Jahan Khan presented the prizes following the final.

The tournament provided another opportunity for Pakistan’s squash players to compete at an international level.

Jahangir Khan praises squash activity

Jahangir Khan congratulated both finalists for their performances. He also welcomed the growing number of squash tournaments being held in Pakistan.

According to the squash legend, the recent increase in competitions represents a positive development for the sport.

Sindh Squash Association President Adnan Asad is also working to bring higher-value tournaments to the province. Karachi is expected to host several major squash events in the near future.

Focus turns to Asian Games and Olympics

Jahangir Khan urged the players to maintain their hard work and continue developing their game.

He said Pakistan’s squash players should aim for gold medals at the Asian Games. He also encouraged them to target qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics.

The latest championship has therefore added another competitive platform for local players. More high-level tournaments could further strengthen Pakistan’s squash programme and help emerging athletes gain valuable international experience.
