Lyari Football took centre stage in Karachi as thousands of fans gathered to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, transforming the international showpiece into a celebration of Pakistan’s football culture. The event also gave local players an opportunity to highlight their talent and urge authorities to invest more in the country’s football development.

Spain ended a 16-year wait for World Cup glory after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July.

To mark football’s biggest event, the Pakistani government organised public screenings at stadiums in several cities. One of the largest gatherings took place at Lyari International Football Stadium, where around 3,500 spectators packed the venue to watch the final. Supporters wearing the jerseys of Lionel Messi, Argentina and Spain created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the night.

Lyari has long been recognised as Pakistan’s football heartland, producing talented players and competitive local teams. The public screening reflected the area’s deep connection with the sport and its passion for international football.

Local footballer Arbaz Khan, who has represented the Lyari football team for a decade, said Pakistani players could compete at the highest level if they received the right opportunities.

“If the government gives us a chance, we can represent Pakistan on the FIFA stage and compete with the world’s best teams,” he said.

Many local players said the screening allowed them to study the tactics, playing styles and techniques of leading international teams. They described the event as both an entertaining experience and a valuable learning opportunity.

Muhammad Adil Tadap, a Lyari resident, thanked the government for organising the public screening and said it brought excitement and unity to the community.

Another resident, Muhammad Mohsin, expressed hope that Lyari’s footballers would one day represent Pakistan at the FIFA World Cup. He said the players possessed exceptional talent but needed stronger institutional support and better opportunities.

Away from the giant screen, several young footballers gathered on a nearby field to play their own matches, discussing tactics and practising goal-scoring techniques while following the World Cup final. The scene highlighted Lyari’s enduring passion for football.

Local player Husnain called for more nationwide support for Lyari’s football teams, saying greater exposure would help talented players reach higher levels.

Veteran coach Sadiq Baloch, who has trained footballers in Lyari for more than a decade, said he hoped his players would one day compete internationally and represent Pakistan with distinction. He also urged the government to promote local football through regular public broadcasts and greater visibility on digital platforms to help emerging players gain national and international recognition.

The public screening brought together football supporters from Lyari and across Karachi, providing not only a shared viewing experience but also inspiration for aspiring players. Residents expressed hope that similar events would continue in the future to strengthen local football and encourage the next generation of Pakistani talent.
