Xi Heads to Trump Summit as China’s Trade Strength Grows

Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on September 24 as both sides seek stability in their increasingly complex relationship.

The summit comes four months after their previous meeting. Since then, China’s exports have remained strong, while the United States has faced pressure from the war with Iran and rising costs.

The main issue will be whether Trump and Xi agree to extend the trade truce reached in October 2025. The agreement helped prevent a sharp escalation in tariffs between the world’s two largest economies.

Analysts expect the leaders to focus on practical agreements rather than a major breakthrough. Preparatory talks have already covered trade, artificial intelligence and other economic issues.

Trade Truce Takes Centre Stage

The 2025 agreement paused a damaging tariff dispute between Washington and Beijing.

The current truce is due to expire on November 10. Both governments have continued negotiations ahead of the summit.

US officials are seeking greater Chinese purchases of American goods. They also want progress on trade barriers and other economic issues.

China, meanwhile, has pushed for further tariff relief and changes to US technology restrictions.

The talks could also cover US liquefied natural gas, agriculture and rare-earth supplies.

Hafiz Naeem Demands Complete Withdrawal of Petroleum Levy

Washington and Beijing are discussing possible reductions in Chinese tariffs on US LNG. The two sides are also examining broader tariff reductions covering billions of dollars in goods.

China’s Trade Surplus Remains Strong

China enters the summit with a strong export sector despite weak domestic demand and a prolonged property crisis.

Its global trade surplus is on track to exceed $1 trillion for a second consecutive year, according to Reuters.

Chinese exports to the United States have also remained resilient across many product categories.

The strong trade performance has reduced pressure on Beijing to make major concessions during the summit. Analysts cited by Reuters said Xi is likely to focus on maintaining stability while strengthening China’s economic resilience.

A group of Chinese business leaders may also accompany Xi to Washington. The delegation could include executives from major companies facing US regulatory scrutiny.

Taiwan Could Feature in Talks

Taiwan remains another sensitive issue between Washington and Beijing.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. The United States maintains close unofficial relations with Taipei and supplies weapons to the island.

Xi raised Taiwan during his May meeting with Trump in Beijing, according to Reuters.

US allies in Asia are watching the issue closely. Some officials have expressed concern that Taiwan could become part of wider negotiations between Washington and Beijing.

Trump has previously described a planned US arms package for Taiwan as a potential negotiating tool.

Beijing could seek changes to US policy toward Taiwan in return for concessions on trade or other issues.

Iran Adds Another Layer to Summit

The war in Iran will also form part of the wider diplomatic backdrop.

Washington has sought China’s help in putting pressure on Tehran. Beijing, however, has shown limited interest in taking such steps, according to Reuters.

China remains an important trading partner for Iran. Reuters has reported that Chinese companies continue to conduct significant trade with the country despite US sanctions.

The issue could create another point of tension during the Trump-Xi meeting.

At the same time, both leaders have an interest in keeping US-China relations stable while they deal with other foreign policy challenges.

AI and Fentanyl Also on Agenda

Artificial intelligence is expected to feature in the discussions.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng have held preparatory talks covering AI, trade, rare earths and other economic matters.

The United States also wants China to take further action against chemicals used to produce fentanyl.

Other possible agreements could involve Chinese purchases of US agricultural products and Boeing aircraft.

The summit therefore covers a wide range of economic and security issues.

For now, the immediate focus remains the trade truce. Any extension would provide both governments with more time to negotiate broader disputes while limiting the risk of another sharp escalation in tariffs.
