US President Donald Trump has appointed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead a new White House task force examining the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence.
Clayton will head the new “Super Intelligence Force”, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The task force will submit a report within 120 days. It will examine AI risks, opportunities and the role of the US government in overseeing the technology.
Clayton said Trump wants the United States to remain a leader in advanced AI.
He said the administration also wants to protect American interests as the technology develops.

“The risk of not being first is high,” Clayton told the Wall Street Journal.
The task force will assess national security risks linked to AI. It will also review existing systems for reporting breaches, hacks and other incidents.
The appointment comes as concerns over AI safety increase.
Some researchers have warned that advanced AI could pose serious risks to humans. Lawmakers from both major US parties have also called for stronger action.
Trump has generally argued against excessive regulation of AI.
He has said heavy government oversight could weaken US competitiveness with China. Trump also said he does not want to work with Chinese President Xi Jinping on AI governance.
The group will include senior members of the Trump administration.
Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles are among its members.
Emil Michael, Scott Kupor and Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson will serve as vice chairs.
External advisers will include former AI czar David Sacks and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to the report.
Clayton is the second Trump adviser to oversee AI policy.
Venture capitalist David Sacks previously held the AI czar role during the early part of Trump’s second term.
Clayton became director of national intelligence in July after the US Senate confirmed him. He oversees the country’s 18 intelligence agencies.
The new task force is expected to recommend ways to strengthen the federal response to AI-related risks under existing government authorities.
