China has taken a major step toward cheaper and more frequent space launches after successfully recovering the first stage of a Zhuque-3 reusable rocket on land.
The Zhuque-3 Y2, developed by Beijing-based private aerospace company LandSpace, launched from the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone in northwest China on Wednesday. The rocket placed the Honghu-03 satellite into its designated orbit before its first stage returned to Earth and completed a controlled landing in Gansu province.
The landing took place less than 10 minutes after liftoff. It marked China’s first successful land-based controlled recovery of an orbital-class launch vehicle’s first stage using deployable landing legs.
The achievement moves China’s reusable rocket programme closer to regular commercial operations. It also strengthens the country’s position in the growing global competition to reduce launch costs and increase launch frequency.
Reusable rockets can fly multiple missions instead of being discarded after every launch. This can significantly reduce the cost of spaceflight by allowing manufacturers to spread the cost of building a rocket across several missions.
LandSpace says the rocket itself represents most of the cost of a conventional expendable launch vehicle. Fuel, by comparison, generally accounts for only 1% to 3% of total launch costs.
The first stage alone typically represents about 70% of the rocket’s cost. Recovering and reusing that stage could therefore deliver major savings if engineers can make refurbishment quick and reliable.
The Zhuque-3 is a two-stage rocket measuring 66.1 metres in length and 4.5 metres in diameter. It has a liftoff mass of about 570 tonnes.
Its first stage uses nine liquid oxygen-methane engines. It also features grid fins, attitude-control systems and landing legs that allow the stage to return autonomously.
The Y2 mission incorporated improvements based on an earlier flight test. LandSpace upgraded recovery reliability, flight control and engine performance.
The company also modified the landing propulsion system and introduced an autonomous safety-control function. The system can predict the landing point and adjust the vehicle’s trajectory during flight.
The mission tested several technologies for future reusable launch vehicles. These included stainless-steel structures, liquid oxygen-methane propulsion and landing-leg recovery.
LandSpace says stainless steel could reduce manufacturing and processing costs while making post-flight maintenance easier.
The successful landing also highlights the growing role of China’s private space sector.
LandSpace is developing Zhuque-3 as a commercial vehicle, while state-owned aerospace programmes are pursuing their own reusable rocket technologies.
The latest achievement came weeks after the Long March-10B reusable rocket completed a sea-based recovery test on July 10.
China is therefore developing both land- and sea-based recovery systems. The approach could help the country build flexible launch capabilities for different missions.
The United States remains the leading force in reusable rockets, with companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin developing competing systems. China, however, is combining state-backed programmes with a rapidly expanding private aerospace industry.
The business case for reusable rockets is becoming stronger as demand for satellite launches increases.
Low-Earth-orbit constellations, satellite internet and space-based information networks require frequent launches. Lower-cost reusable rockets could help operators deploy large numbers of satellites more efficiently.
LandSpace says Zhuque-3 can support several commercial missions. These include constellation deployment, individual satellite launches and rideshare missions.
In expendable configuration, the rocket can carry up to 14.2 tonnes to orbit. Its reusable configuration is being developed with future large satellite constellations in mind.
The company now wants to establish a complete cycle of launch, recovery, inspection and reuse. Its long-term goal is to make rocket operations more frequent and reliable.

LandSpace is not the only Chinese company working on reusable rockets.
Galactic Energy is developing Pallas-1, while Orienspace is preparing Gravity-2 for a planned maiden flight in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Space Pioneer is advancing Yuanxingzhe-1, while i-Space is developing Hyperbola-3. CAS Space is also working on the reusable Lihong-2.
The growing number of programmes suggests that China’s reusable rocket ambitions extend well beyond a single company.
Private companies and state-owned programmes are testing different propulsion, recovery and landing technologies while competing for a growing commercial market.
The successful recovery of Zhuque-3 is an important milestone, but it does not yet prove that reusable launches can operate commercially at high frequency.
The real challenge will be turning the successful landing into a reliable cycle of launch, recovery, inspection, refurbishment and reuse.
A rocket that lands successfully once must eventually demonstrate that engineers can safely prepare it for another flight without excessive cost or downtime.
If Chinese companies succeed, reusable rockets could significantly reshape the country’s commercial space industry.
The Zhuque-3 Y2 mission therefore represents more than a successful landing. It marks another step toward China’s goal of building a lower-cost, high-frequency commercial space transportation system.
