US-Iran conflict escalated on Saturday after US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that two American service members were killed in Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan. Another service member remains missing.

Centcom said four US personnel were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan for treatment. Doctors later discharged them. Other troops with minor injuries returned to duty.

The US military did not identify the two service members. Officials also withheld the exact location of the attack. Centcom said it would release more information after notifying the families.

In a statement, Centcom said two US service members died while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. It added that one service member remains missing.

The latest casualties raise the US military death toll in the conflict to 16. Earlier this month, the Navy declared a missing pilot dead.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute to the fallen troops on X. He wrote: “Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”

Earlier, Jordan’s military said its air defence systems intercepted 10 Iranian missiles overnight. Authorities reported no damage from the interceptions.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it destroyed at least two US fighter aircraft at Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan. Iranian state media carried the claim. Centcom neither confirmed nor denied it.

The US Department of State also issued a security advisory. It urged Americans in the Middle East and elsewhere to monitor developments closely. The department also advised citizens to exercise increased caution because regional tensions remain high.

The conflict has intensified despite a preliminary agreement that Washington and Tehran reached in June. The deal collapsed within weeks.

Iranian state media, citing the Health Ministry, said at least 50 people have died. More than 500 others have suffered injuries during US strikes over the past three weeks.

Official figures also show that thousands of people have died across the Middle East since fighting between the United States, Israel and Iran intensified on 28 February.

Friday marked the seventh consecutive night of US military strikes on Iranian targets. During the week, Washington tightened restrictions on Iranian ports. Tehran also launched attacks against US allies in the Gulf. It declared the Strait of Hormuz closed.

Both sides continue to accuse each other of attacking civilian infrastructure.

The United States rejected Iran’s claims that it struck bridges, a railway station and an airport. Washington insisted it targeted only military sites. However, independent verification confirmed damage to a bridge in Hormozgan Province.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) accused Iran of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. Kuwait reported damage to a power station and a water desalination plant after Iranian strikes.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi described the attacks as “war crimes.” He urged all parties to respect international law.

Late on Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei accused Washington of repeatedly violating previous agreements. He said US actions had destroyed trust.

The latest exchange of attacks has deepened fears of a wider regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions have yet to produce a breakthrough.
