Islamabad: Monsoon Rains prompted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday to direct the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to strengthen coordination with provincial governments to prevent emergencies during the ongoing rainy season.

The prime minister issued the instructions during a meeting with NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Shehbaz Sharif called for closer coordination between the NDMA, provincial governments and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to improve preparedness and ensure a swift response to any emergency caused by heavy rainfall.

During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on the country’s disaster preparedness and its capacity to respond to potential monsoon-related emergencies.

The briefing also covered progress on fully operationalising the national early warning system and expanding cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change to improve disaster risk management.

Pakistan’s monsoon season runs from June to September and plays a vital role in replenishing water resources. However, intense rainfall often causes floods, landslides and displacement, particularly in vulnerable and densely populated areas.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s seasonal outlook, Gilgit-Baltistan, adjoining parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to receive near-normal rainfall during the 2026 monsoon season.

The forecast also indicates above-normal temperatures across much of the Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalaya region. Higher temperatures could accelerate snow and glacier melt, increasing river flows during the monsoon period.
