Cyclosporiasis cases continue to rise across the United States, with the outbreak now affecting 31 states and health officials reporting thousands of suspected infections in recent weeks.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 843 cases between 1 May and 9 July. The agency said it is reviewing more than 1,500 additional reports that may also be linked to the outbreak. Authorities have reported no deaths, although 86 patients have required hospital treatment.

Michigan has recorded the highest number of infections. State health officials confirmed more than 1,000 cases over a two-week period. New York has reported nearly 300 cases, while Illinois and Ohio have also recorded above-average infection numbers.

What Is Cyclosporiasis?

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People usually become infected after consuming contaminated food or water.

The illness commonly causes frequent, watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. Symptoms typically develop about one week after infection and can last for several weeks if left untreated.

Health experts say the parasite does not spread directly from one person to another. Instead, people become infected by consuming contaminated produce or water.

Investigators Search for the Source

The CDC said all confirmed patients became ill after eating food in the United States and reported no recent international travel.

Investigators have not identified the source of contamination. However, previous outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce, including bagged salads, cilantro, basil, raspberries, snow peas and green onions.

Experts say contamination often occurs during farming or irrigation, making it difficult to trace the source.

Health Officials Issue Safety Advice

Michigan health authorities have advised restaurants and food businesses to wash fresh produce thoroughly, remove the outer leaves of lettuce and green onions, and cook produce when practical.

Although the US Food and Drug Administration says washing alone may not eliminate the parasite, the CDC still recommends rinsing fruits and vegetables before consumption.

Doctors also advise anyone experiencing persistent diarrhoea to seek medical care and discuss the possibility of a Cyclospora infection.
