As heatwaves become more frequent worldwide, choosing the right heatwave clothing can help people stay comfortable and reduce the need for air conditioning. Experts say loose, breathable garments cool the body more effectively than tight-fitting clothes.
Heatwave diet Three expert tips to stay cool and hydrated in hot weather
Many people wear white during summer because it reflects sunlight. However, researchers say colour alone does not determine how cool clothing feels. White reflects the sun’s rays, but it can also reflect body heat back towards the wearer.
A landmark study on Bedouin communities found that loose black robes provided similar heat protection to loose white robes. The flowing garments created air circulation that carried heat away before it reached the skin.
Researchers say clothing fit often matters more than colour. Loose garments improve airflow, while textured fabrics such as seersucker and pique keep material away from the skin. If you wear fitted clothing, lighter colours remain the better choice.
Fabric plays a major role in keeping the body cool. Fashion experts recommend lightweight woven materials such as cotton, linen and silk because they allow better airflow.
Cotton and linen absorb moisture well but dry slowly. They can become uncomfortable in humid weather. Nylon and polyester dry faster and move sweat away from the skin, making them popular for sportswear. Merino wool also offers excellent breathability while resisting odours.
Experts say breathable fabrics allow heat and moisture to escape more easily. This feature becomes especially important when humidity slows the evaporation of sweat.
Scientists continue to develop advanced cooling fabrics. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed ultra-thin synthetic fibres that reflect sunlight while allowing body heat to escape.
Other research teams have created adaptive textiles that expand as temperatures rise, increasing airflow. Some experimental fabrics also contain materials that absorb excess heat before releasing it gradually.
Experts say wearing fewer layers remains one of the best ways to stay cool while protecting exposed skin from harmful UV rays. Wet clothing can also lower body temperature because evaporating water removes heat from the skin.
Researchers conclude that breathable fabrics, loose-fitting clothes and proper moisture management offer the most effective way to stay comfortable during extreme heat.
