The US Tariffs announced on Friday impose new import duties of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners. The White House said the measures target countries that have not adequately enforced bans on forced labour.

The new duties took effect as a temporary 10% global tariff expired at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT). The administration introduced the replacement tariffs immediately, while exempting goods already in transit until July 28.

New Tariffs Cover Most US Imports

The White House announced the measures through a Federal Register notice on Thursday. Officials said the tariffs cover 99.4% of US imports but exclude several products, including oil, natural gas, fertiliser and selected food items.

The administration imposed the duties under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. Officials said this legal authority offers a stronger foundation after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s earlier “reciprocal” tariffs in February.

Those previous duties, which ranged from 10% to 50%, relied on emergency powers designed to reduce the US trade deficit.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the United States has enforced a ban on imports linked to forced labour for decades. He urged trading partners to strengthen their own enforcement measures.

Greer said the new tariffs aim to address human rights concerns while creating fairer conditions for workers and businesses.

Pakistan Among Countries Facing 10% Duty

The United States imposed a 10% tariff on imports from Argentina, Bangladesh, Britain, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Trinidad and Tobago.

The European Union, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland received tariff rates that, together with existing most-favoured-nation duties, total 10% or 12.5%.

Greer previously said countries that negotiated trade agreements with Washington would not face tariff increases beyond the levels agreed under those deals.

The latest measures mark another step in the Trump administration’s effort to reshape US trade policy while reducing legal challenges to its tariff programme.
