King Charles and Queen Camilla made a dramatic entrance at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, emerging from a Tardis to loud applause inside the Hydro arena.
The royal couple appeared on a stage transformed into a magical Scottish garden. Their arrival surprised spectators and set the tone for a ceremony that celebrated Glasgow’s heritage, creativity and sporting legacy.
The event featured athletes from 74 nations and territories, performances by leading Scottish artists and tributes to the city’s industrial past, music and culture.
For the first time in Commonwealth Games history, athletes entered the arena before the ceremony officially began.
Botswana led the parade, while Team Scotland received the biggest ovation from the home crowd. Bowls champion Alex Marshall and judoka Sarah Adlington carried Scotland’s flag into the arena.
Instead of the traditional baton relay, organisers gave each nation a decorated wooden baton. Gardeners planted the batons on stage to create a symbolic international garden representing unity across the Commonwealth.

Six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy emerged from the Tardis before King Charles and Queen Camilla surprised the audience by following him onto the stage.
Outlander actor Sam Heughan introduced a giant Loch Ness Monster during one of the show’s most memorable moments. Pipers and drummers then performed a powerful rendition of Flower of Scotland.
The production also highlighted Glasgow’s textile industry, shipbuilding heritage and famous nightlife, paying tribute to landmarks such as the Barrowland Ballroom and the Sub Club.
Singer Nathan Evans performed his hit Home alongside Saint PHNX Band, while Callum Beattie led athletes and spectators in a lively rendition of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie.
Tom Walker later performed Leave the Light On, and KT Tunstall thrilled the audience with Black Horse & the Cherry Tree and Suddenly I See. She also led fans in a spirited chant of “No Scotland No Party.”
The ceremony concluded with Nathan Evans returning to the stage before a giant pyrotechnic Tunnock’s Teacake lifted into the air, echoing one of the most memorable moments from the Glasgow 2014 opening ceremony.
During the ceremony, swimmer Hannah Miley and Paralympic cyclist Neil Fachie carried the King’s Baton into the arena before handing it to basketball player Kieron Achara, who presented it to King Charles.
The King removed a message he had placed inside the baton more than 500 days earlier. He thanked athletes, volunteers, organisers and the people of Glasgow for making the Games possible.
Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare said the event demonstrated the power of sport to unite people from different cultures. Glasgow 2026 Chair George Black praised the city for stepping in to host the Games after Australia’s Victoria withdrew because of rising costs.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will run for 11 days, with athletes competing for 215 medals across 10 sports. The event also features a record 47 para-sport medal events.
