Spider-Man has climbed above James Cameron’s Titanic at the worldwide box office, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film in cinema history.

The Marvel Studios blockbuster reached the milestone during its fourth weekend in theatres. The film added about $39 million in North America and another $109 million internationally, pushing its global earnings beyond $2.2 billion.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Tom Holland alongside Zendaya. Its latest box-office performance has placed the superhero sequel among the biggest commercial successes ever recorded.

Brand New Day climbs global rankings

The latest figures move Brand New Day above Titanic, Cameron’s 1997 epic that has remained one of the industry’s biggest box-office performers for decades.

Titanic has benefited from several theatrical re-releases over the years. Those additional runs have helped maintain its position near the top of the all-time global rankings.

The gap between the two films stands at around $50 million. If the Marvel sequel maintains its current momentum, it could soon overtake Ne Zha 2 and move another place higher.

That would put the film firmly among the most commercially successful movies in history.

Sony records another major milestone

The film has also delivered a major achievement for Sony. Brand New Day has become the studio’s highest-grossing release, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home and its worldwide total of about $1.9 billion.

The film has also performed strongly in North America. Its domestic earnings recently moved it past Avengers: Endgame, placing it second on the all-time domestic box-office chart.

Cameron films still dominate the top

Brand New Day still trails Avatar: The Way of Water, which occupies third place. Avengers: Endgame ranks second, while Cameron’s original Avatar remains at the top.

Avatar has earned approximately $2.9 billion worldwide, including revenue from theatrical re-releases.

With millions of dollars still separating the films, the final position of Brand New Day will depend on how strongly it performs during the remainder of its theatrical run.
