Scientific Research is essential for Pakistan’s future, Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi said on Wednesday. He stressed that knowledge, innovation and advanced research are the foundations of sustainable growth, self-reliance and global competitiveness.

The governor spoke at a Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan ceremony honouring leading Pakistani researchers and scientists. He said the Holy Quran repeatedly encourages people to seek knowledge, reflect and conduct research. According to him, scientific inquiry and innovation remain the driving forces of national progress.

Importance of science and innovation

Hashmi said nations that invest in science and research continue to prosper. In contrast, countries that neglect innovation struggle to compete globally. He described Pakistani researchers and scientists as among the country’s greatest assets. Their achievements, he said, will help secure a stronger and more prosperous future.

The governor credited Pakistan’s scientists with making valuable contributions to the country’s success in Marka-e-Haq. He added that research is opening new opportunities in water resources, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, engineering and emerging technologies. These sectors will shape the next phase of global development.

Call for stronger research policies

He urged the government and society to support scientists through better funding and recognition. He also called for meaningful representation of researchers in national policymaking. According to the governor, countries that prioritise science consistently rank among the world’s most developed nations.

Hashmi praised NED University for producing outstanding engineers, researchers and scientists. He said universities, industries and government institutions must strengthen their collaboration. Such partnerships, he added, are essential for building a knowledge-based economy.

The governor encouraged young Pakistanis to pursue ambitious goals. He urged them to make research and innovation central to their careers. Future generations, he said, will look to successful scientists as role models.

Nuclear programme and scientific achievements

Hashmi said former Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme. He added that former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif strengthened the country’s defence through the successful nuclear tests on May 28, 1998. He described the achievement as a symbol of scientific excellence, technological self-reliance and national security.

The governor welcomed HEC’s recognition of outstanding researchers. He said such initiatives will encourage innovation and strengthen Pakistan’s research culture.

HEC outlines research funding

HEC Chairman Engr. Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Akhtar said the National Research Programme and Global Research Categories are creating opportunities for young researchers. The commission received around 7,000 research proposals this year. After a competitive evaluation, it approved 142 projects.

Akhtar said HEC allocated Rs4 billion to support research activities. Last year, the commission approved 43 projects. This year, the number increased to 142. He expressed confidence that the projects would produce practical solutions for society.

Provincial Minister for Universities and Boards Ismail Rahoo also addressed the ceremony. He said universities must strengthen their research culture to meet Pakistan’s future challenges.
