Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly heading to London’s West End to lead Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming stage play The Popinjay Cavalier.
According to Deadline, sources close to the production say Baron Cohen will play the title character in the play. The production is expected to open at an undisclosed West End venue in spring 2027.
Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment are producing the project. Tarantino has written and directed the play, which is described as a swashbuckling comedy set in 1830s Europe.
The story is expected to explore deception, disguise and romance. It will also draw on the grand adventure traditions often seen in theatre and cinema.
The Popinjay Cavalier marks Tarantino’s first produced stage play. The project gives the filmmaker a new format for his distinctive dialogue and storytelling style.
Tarantino is best known for films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He has also spoken publicly about his interest in theatre.
The filmmaker revealed in 2025 that he had completed the play. He said he planned to begin developing the production the following year.
Tarantino also indicated that the project could occupy a significant period of his career. The production companies later confirmed plans to bring the play to London in early 2027.
For Baron Cohen, the project represents another major move towards live theatre after years of work in film and television.
The actor is widely known for creating characters such as Ali G and Borat. His film credits include Borat, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Les Misérables.
He is also preparing to return as Ali G in the upcoming project Ali G: Who Iz I?

Baron Cohen’s physical comedy and character-driven performances could suit a play built around disguise and theatrical exaggeration. His ability to shift between comic and dramatic roles could also add a different dimension to Tarantino’s material.
The pairing of Baron Cohen and Tarantino has already generated interest ahead of the production.
Tarantino is known for distinctive dialogue, unconventional characters and stylised storytelling. Baron Cohen, meanwhile, has built a career around bold performances and memorable comic characters.
However, several key details remain unconfirmed.
The production has not yet announced its West End theatre, exact opening date or complete creative team. Further casting and scheduling details are expected to emerge as the 2027 opening approaches.
