KARACHI, September 18, 2026: Rotary Club Karachi Nexus organised a focus meeting to mark Literacy Month and discuss education challenges in Pakistan.
A large number of Rotarians, district officials and community representatives attended the event. Senior officials from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNIO and the United Nations also participated.
Officials from NADRA and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation also attended the meeting.
Faiz Kidwai, Chairman of Rotary Pakistan UTC (United for Literacy), attended as the chief guest. Abdul Jabbar Murri, Director of Nourpha Education, was the guest of honour.
Iqbal Qureshi, who leads Pakistan Literacy Nation Pakistan, also attended the session.
Muhammad Ali Haider, General Secretary of Rotary Club Karachi Nexus, presented details of the club’s Out-of-School Children Project.
He explained the project’s efforts to identify and enrol school-age children who remain outside the education system.

The club and district leadership are working towards a goal of zero out-of-school children in two Union Councils.
The initiative aims to ensure that every school-age child in the selected areas attends school.
President Rotary Club Karachi Nexus Malik Tahir Iqbal Arain also briefed participants on the club’s education initiatives.
He highlighted the club’s work in the education sector and outlined plans for future projects.
Arain also announced plans to develop a disability agenda through the Rotary Club Karachi Nexus platform.
Faiz Kidwai said improving government schools remains essential to raising education standards.
“When we cannot fix the structure of government schools, the quality of education cannot improve,” he said.
He said Pakistan cannot improve education nationwide by relying only on private schools.
Kidwai also spoke about changes in social values.
He said school education was weaker in the past, but people showed greater civility and social values. He added that education has improved in many areas, while civility has declined.
He stressed the need to teach children how to become responsible and good citizens.
Kidwai said Rotary Mission of Pakistan would continue working on education projects with UNICEF.
He also briefed participants about a tablet programme launched by Pakistan Smart Village.
He called for a long-term national education programme. He said the chief ministers of all four provinces should work together to achieve the goal.
Rotary International District 3271 Pakistan District Governor Shahzad Sabir praised the Out-of-School Children Project.
He said the district would support Rotary Club Karachi Nexus in expanding the initiative.
“I have appreciated this project on every forum and promoted it,” Sabir said.
He added that the district wanted to see the initiative become a district-level project in the future.
The meeting also included discussions on literacy, non-formal education and cooperation with organisations working in the education sector.
Adeel, Chairman of Non-Formal Education of the district, delivered the vote of thanks.
He said Rotary Club Karachi Nexus would continue organising programmes focused on education and literacy.
Muslim Hands, representing CRA, will also work with Rotary on education-related initiatives, according to the organisers.
Aslam Khaliq, Chair of Membership Development, distributed membership certificates to new members during the event.
The gathering also brought together former club presidents, office-bearers, district officials and members from different professional backgrounds.

Baig, Shujaat Baig, Mirza Intikhab Alam, Saeed Ahmed, Naseem Bukhari, Parveen Khan, Jamal Zia, Imran Mehmood, Mehnaz Imran, Gulraiz Ahmed Raza, Zareen Ansari, Fahad Ansari, Dr Atif Saeed Anjum, Naeem Ullah Khan, Muhammad Kamal Khan, Barrister Samina Rani, Architect Iqbal Baloch, Nasira Khan, Ahmed Zeeshan, Syed Osama Zaidi, Saima Naqi, Zubia Azeem, Professor Murshid Ali Khan, Shariq Ahmed, Syed Turab Shah, Syed Talha Ali and Junaid Hidayat.
The meeting concluded with a renewed focus on literacy, education access and efforts to bring out-of-school children into the education system.
