Manchester United came from two goals behind to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday. The dramatic victory offered manager Michael Carrick some relief after a difficult period.
Meanwhile, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain maintained their perfect record in the competition with a commanding 6-0 win over Villarreal.
United looked set for another disappointing result after conceding twice within the opening 18 minutes.
Mathias Soule opened the scoring with a composed finish before Donyell Malen converted a penalty to put Roma firmly in control.
The atmosphere at Old Trafford turned hostile as frustrated supporters threw tennis balls and other objects onto the pitch. Fans also directed angry chants towards the club’s majority owners, the Glazer family.
However, United produced a remarkable second-half response.
Bruno Fernandes brought the hosts back into the contest in the 58th minute. He scored from the penalty spot after Roma goalkeeper Devis Vasquez had initially saved his first attempt. The referee ordered a retake because players had encroached into the penalty area.

Matheus Cunha then struck twice within three minutes to complete United’s comeback. His late goals sparked celebrations around Old Trafford, although he was sent off during stoppage time.
“We knew that the fans would be behind us until the last day, we just had to get a result for them,” United captain Bruno Fernandes told TNT.
Carrick praised his players for their second-half performance.
“I spoke at half-time about being positive. Anything can happen here, I’ve seen it many times over the years,” he said.
“You just need something to go our way and the boys were fantastic second half.”
United now turn their attention to Sunday’s match against Aston Villa. Villa suffered a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona.
The result also gave Carrick some breathing room ahead of the international break. Roma, meanwhile, suffered another setback after failing to protect a two-goal advantage.
Paris Saint-Germain delivered another emphatic performance, beating Villarreal 6-0 despite missing several key players.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, captain Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes were among those absent.
PSG nevertheless overwhelmed their Spanish opponents with four goals in just eight first-half minutes. Joao Neves, Desire Doue, Senny Mayulu and Fabian Ruiz all found the net during the remarkable spell.

The four-goal burst reportedly set a record for the fastest four goals scored in a match in the Champions League.
Ruiz added another goal after the break, while teenager David Boly completed the scoring.
The victory moved Luis Enrique’s side to the top of the table.
“We were impressive throughout and we are really pleased even if it is very difficult for Villarreal,” Luis Enrique said.
“But it is hard when you play against a team like us that presses constantly.”
Bayern Munich also strengthened their position in the competition with a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Teenage Germany forward Lennart Karl opened the scoring before Konrad Laimer added a second in the Spanish capital.

Bayern secured the win despite missing several key players, including Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari.
Before kick-off, clubs across Europe observed a moment of silence in memory of Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel.
The 30-year-old died from injuries sustained in a collision with FC Andorra’s goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match.
His death prompted tributes and condolences from across the football community.
