A deadly Mine Blast in Quetta’s Sor Range has killed 34 miners, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan, as rescue workers continue efforts to reach those still trapped underground. The methane gas explosion occurred on Thursday after gas accumulated inside the coal mine, triggering a powerful blast that caused a major section of the tunnel to collapse. Officials said 41 miners were working inside the mine when the accident happened.

Rescue Operation Continues

Rescue teams from the Mines and Minerals Department, district administration, and emergency services reached the site soon after the explosion. They have recovered the bodies of 34 miners and continue searching for the remaining workers trapped beneath the debris.

Chief Inspector of Mines Muhammad Atif said the miners were working at a depth of 2,500 to 3,000 feet when the explosion occurred. He added that the blast damaged an alternative ventilation passage, making rescue operations more difficult by disrupting the supply of air and oxygen inside the mine.

Authorities are using heavy machinery and all available resources to clear the collapsed sections. The recovered bodies are being shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta for legal formalities before being transported to their hometowns.

Government Orders Inquiry

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti took immediate notice of the incident and directed the Mines and Minerals Department to submit a detailed report. He also ordered a transparent investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and identify any negligence. The chief minister said strict legal action would be taken if officials or mine operators were found responsible.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and described the methane gas explosion as heartbreaking. He instructed the PDMA and relevant departments to continue rescue operations without delay and ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

The prime minister also called for permanent safety measures in Pakistan’s coal mines. He said the rescue mission should continue until every affected worker had been reached and all relief efforts were completed. He offered condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for those who lost their lives.

Safety Concerns Return

The latest tragedy has once again highlighted safety concerns in Balochistan’s mining industry. In recent months, several deadly accidents linked to methane gas, poor ventilation, and inadequate safety systems have claimed the lives of dozens of miners in Duki, Degari, and Harnai districts.

Labour unions have repeatedly accused authorities and mine operators of failing to enforce basic workplace safety standards. They say many miners continue to work without proper protective equipment, gas detection systems, or effective emergency response mechanisms.
