The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has stepped up efforts to bring opposition parties together ahead of its planned September 27 protest.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan invited Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and other opposition parties to join the march.
The PTI says the protest will remain peaceful. The party has linked the mobilisation to demands for justice, fresh elections and protection of constitutional rights.
A PTI delegation led by Gohar met Fazlur Rehman at his residence on Friday. Former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser also joined the delegation.
The two sides discussed the September 27 protest, a proposed all-parties conference and plans for a joint opposition platform.
Speaking after the meeting, Gohar said the two sides had reached an agreement in principle to form a joint opposition in both houses of Parliament.
“Talks were held with Maulana Fazlur Rehman on a joint opposition,” Gohar said.
He added that opposition parties would be consulted on major national issues.
Gohar said the proposed alliance would also discuss parliamentary matters and issues involving prisoners.
Meanwhile, he said the opposition was considering an all-parties conference to address political, constitutional and economic challenges.
The proposed agenda includes the creation of new provinces, law and order, inflation and the country’s economic situation.
“The first meeting today was encouraging and will continue in the future,” Gohar said.
The meeting also focused on strengthening constitutional and democratic institutions.
According to a statement from the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), the leaders discussed joint efforts to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law.
The statement said the parties also wanted to protect democratic principles through political consultation and cooperation.
JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri welcomed the PTI delegation.
He said the meeting also covered preparations for the proposed all-parties conference.
Haidri said the opposition would discuss the creation of new provinces along with other national issues.
He added that the situation in Balochistan, terrorism and other challenges would also form part of the consultations.
“We will try to play some role in dealing with the problems the country is facing,” Haidri said.
The latest meeting is part of a wider effort to build a united opposition ahead of the September 27 mobilisation.
PTI leaders began contacting opposition parties last month.
On August 20, the TTAP and JUI-F also announced plans to establish a “united opposition” after consultations on political cooperation and future strategy.
The joint opposition later held its first parliamentary meeting.
Fazlur Rehman, Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri, Gohar and other political leaders attended the meeting.
The participants agreed to pursue a collective strategy on political repression, economic challenges and other national issues.
Achakzai later said he and Raja Nasir had met PTI leaders, including Gohar.
He also said the opposition would convene an all-parties conference at the earliest.
The opposition agreed to meet on September 15 to review preparations for the conference. It also decided to contact other political parties.

The September 27 protest remains a key point of cooperation among the opposition parties.
PTI leaders have said the mobilisation will not remain limited to Islamabad. They have urged supporters across the country to participate.
However, the planned protest has also faced a legal challenge.
A petition has been filed before the Islamabad High Court against the PTI’s planned sit-in and nationwide protest.
The petitioner has argued that the demonstration could disrupt traffic, business activity and daily life in the capital.
The petition also questions the use of provincial resources for the planned mobilisation.
The legal challenge adds another layer to the political tensions surrounding the September 27 protest.
At the same time, the government and opposition have continued limited political engagement.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited Achakzai for consultations on the appointment of a new chief election commissioner.
The invitation comes shortly before the PTI-led September 27 protest.
The parallel developments highlight the complex political environment in Pakistan, where opposition parties are seeking greater coordination while the government continues consultations on key constitutional and electoral matters.
