A newborn girl who survived a deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has died after 22 days of treatment, according to her death certificate and hospital sources.
The baby died at PIMS on September 17 after her condition deteriorated following the fire. She had been rescued alive from the blaze by a nurse.
The death brings the number of newborn babies killed in the incident to 15. Fourteen newborns had died in the fire, while the girl initially survived.
According to her death certificate, the newborn died following cardiac and respiratory arrest.
The baby was admitted to PIMS on August 26 and remained under treatment for 22 days.
During her hospitalisation, she developed several serious complications. These included sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and pulmonary bleeding.
Her condition remained critical after she was rescued from the fire.

Doctors continued treatment as her condition worsened. However, she could not recover from the complications that developed following the incident.
Sources said the newborn was among the babies rescued alive after the fire.
A nurse brought her out of the affected area and she was later admitted for treatment at PIMS.
The baby remained under medical care as doctors treated the complications that emerged during her hospitalisation.
Despite continued treatment, her condition eventually deteriorated.
The newborn’s death has increased the toll among babies affected by the PIMS fire.
The death certificate lists cardiac and respiratory arrest as the immediate cause of death. It also records sepsis, DIC and pulmonary bleeding among the serious complications documented during her treatment.
The incident had already claimed the lives of 14 other newborn babies.
The latest death adds to the toll from the fire and highlights the severe medical complications suffered by some of the surviving infants.
