NEW YORK, September 26, 2026: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis to resolve their differences through dialogue.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Pezeshkian said Iran was ready to help resolve the dispute.
He also rejected claims that Tehran was directly involved in the latest fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
“What is happening in Yemen is not linked to Iran,” Pezeshkian said.
He added that Iran stood in solidarity with people facing what it described as injustice.
Pezeshkian also said Iran did not want to promote war.
He stressed that regional disputes should not turn into conflicts between neighbouring or fellow Muslim countries.
Pezeshkian also addressed the continuing crisis around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
He blamed the United States for blocking Iran’s access and defended Tehran’s decision to restrict passage through the waterway.
“It was America that blocked our paths,” he said.
Pezeshkian described the closure as a response to what he called US pressure on Iran.
Iran has separately proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader plan to halt hostilities in the region. The proposal was transmitted to Washington through mediators, according to Iranian officials.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s proposal could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
Under the proposal, wider hostilities would also end, while Washington would lift its blockade on Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian funds and waive oil sanctions, according to Iranian officials.
Reuters reported that Iran was awaiting an official US response after The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump had rejected the proposal. Reuters said it could not immediately independently confirm the Journal report.
A senior Iranian official also told Reuters that Tehran would not make concessions on its nuclear programme as part of the proposal.
Iran has maintained that it has the right to enrich uranium, while the United States and its allies have raised concerns over Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Dar Calls for End to Terror Threat From Afghanistan
Pezeshkian’s comments come as fighting between Saudi-backed forces and the Houthis has intensified in Yemen.
The Houthis have expanded their presence along parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, while Saudi Arabia has carried out military operations against the group.
The escalation has also raised concerns over shipping routes in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are both important routes for energy and commercial shipping.
The renewed fighting has added pressure to regional security and global energy markets.
Pezeshkian has also said Iran remains open to negotiations with Washington but that trust must first be rebuilt.
In separate remarks reported during the UN General Assembly, he said Iran wanted a regional peace settlement but questioned US intentions.
The Iranian president has argued that Washington must demonstrate that it does not seek to overthrow Iran’s government before meaningful negotiations can resume.
His latest comments combine calls for regional dialogue with demands for changes in US policy toward Tehran.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue at the United Nations as Iran seeks an agreement that would address the Strait of Hormuz crisis and the wider conflict.
