OpenAI has launched Dots, a new type of always-on AI agent designed to work on users’ projects and tasks in the background.
The company describes Dots as proactive assistants that can handle complex projects and everyday work without waiting for users to send repeated prompts.
Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and web browser. It can also use connected tools to complete tasks across different services.
Unlike traditional chatbots, Dots are designed to continue working toward assigned goals after users give them instructions.
OpenAI says users can provide feedback while a Dot works. The agent can use that feedback to better understand user preferences and how tasks should be handled.
Dots can also conduct research proactively and continue working on projects in the background.

Users can set permissions and custom rules for their agents. These rules can require approval before a Dot performs certain actions.
The system is powered by GPT-6 Astra and can maintain context while working across connected applications.
Users can interact with Dots through ChatGPT and workplace platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams.
OpenAI says the agents can maintain context across different channels. The company also plans to add access through text messages.
Dots can connect with services such as email and messaging platforms. This allows them to handle recurring workflows instead of simply responding to individual prompts.
Users can create and name a primary Dot. OpenAI plans to introduce teams of Dots in a future release.
OpenAI is initially rolling out Dots to selected paid users and organisations in certain markets.
Eligible users can create a Dot through the ChatGPT desktop app. They can later access the agents through supported mobile experiences.
OpenAI says Dots are available at no additional cost for eligible users. However, tasks will consume the usage allowances included with each user’s plan.
The Dots launch comes alongside GPT-6.1 Sol, a new model aimed at complex coding, computer use and professional workflows.
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol delivers performance close to GPT-6 Astra while offering a lower-cost option.
The model is being rolled out to eligible paid users through ChatGPT Work and Codex. It is also available through the API.
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol is designed to handle multistep workflows and agentic tasks while providing a more cost-efficient alternative to GPT-6 Astra.
