KPop Demon Hunters 2 has reportedly secured a theatrical release following the huge success of the original animated film on Netflix. However, Netflix has yet to officially confirm the cinema plans.
A report by The Hollywood Reporter on October 20 mentioned the sequel’s theatrical release. According to the report, former Netflix film chief Dan Lin helped secure the plans before leaving the company.
The move follows the strong response to limited cinema screenings of the first film. KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix’s most-watched title, attracting audiences beyond the streaming platform.
Netflix and Sony reportedly agreed to develop a second animated film in November 2025. The sequel is currently planned for release in 2029.

Several other projects linked to the franchise have also been discussed. These include a live-action adaptation, a stage production, a spin-off series and a short film. Netflix has not officially confirmed these projects.
The original film follows Huntrix, a musical group that balances its career with protecting the Honmoon. Co-director Maggie Kang has said the story leaves room for further exploration.
“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” she told Variety in July.
“Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.”
The franchise has expanded beyond streaming through merchandise, sing-along screenings and brand collaborations. Its partnerships include McDonald’s, Fortnite and LEGO.
The film’s singers, EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna, have also performed its music at major events, including the Oscars.
The reported cinema plans reflect a wider debate within Netflix over theatrical releases. The Hollywood Reporter said Lin supported cinema screenings, citing younger audiences’ interest in the big-screen experience.
Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos, meanwhile, has favoured a strategy focused on streaming.
For now, the sequel’s reported theatrical release remains unconfirmed by Netflix. Fans will have to wait for an official announcement about its cinema plans and the wider future of the franchise.
