Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised President Donald Trump’s proposal to use frozen Iranian assets to compensate for damage to commercial shipping, saying the move would undermine international norms.

Posting on X on Friday, Araghchi said confiscating another country’s assets to settle unrelated future claims would create an “incendiary precedent.” He warned that normalising such actions would leave no nation’s assets secure and could trigger wider instability.

Trump earlier wrote on Truth Social that “any and all damages” caused to cargo ships would be paid with “Iranian money,” referring to frozen Iranian assets held by the United States. He did not explain how the administration would implement such a policy.

Iran Claims Drone Strikes on US Bases

Iran’s military said it launched drone attacks targeting US military facilities at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain and Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan.

According to Iranian state media, the strikes targeted fuel storage areas, aircraft hangars, equipment warehouses and accommodation facilities used by US personnel.

Bahrain’s Interior Ministry activated warning sirens and urged residents to move to safe locations. However, US, Bahraini and Jordanian authorities did not immediately confirm the attacks, and no casualties or damage were officially reported.

Iran warned that any action against its interests would also threaten the security and economic interests of other countries in the region.

Shipping Disruptions Raise Oil Market Concerns

Ship-tracking data showed only one oil tanker crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, the lowest daily total since May. No ships entered the strategic waterway on July 23.

Meanwhile, traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait increased as some vessels adjusted their routes.

The latest developments have intensified concerns over global energy supplies. Brent crude oil rose more than 6%, climbing above $100 per barrel for the first time since May as fears grew over possible disruptions to key shipping lanes.

Trump Warns of Further Military Action

Trump vowed to hold Iran responsible for future attacks carried out by Yemen’s Houthi movement after the group claimed responsibility for strikes on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

He warned that any further attacks would trigger “major military punishment” against both Iran and the Houthis. Trump also told Axios that he was considering broader military operations against Iran.

The Houthis said they had targeted the Saudi oil tankers as part of a naval blockade. Maritime security officials reported that one tanker sustained damage and caught fire near the Saudi port of Jizan.

Regional Tensions Continue to Rise

Iran also claimed it targeted US military positions in Jordan and Kuwait. Jordan’s military said it intercepted several Iranian missiles and drones, while Kuwait and the United States did not report any casualties.

Iranian officials pledged to continue retaliatory operations if US military strikes persist.

The escalating conflict has renewed concerns about regional security, global energy markets and the risk of broader military confrontation across the Middle East.
