Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi said Press Freedom is a fundamental pillar of democracy and stressed that journalists should exercise freedom of expression with responsibility and in the national interest. He made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) at the Governor House in Karachi.

The delegation, led by CPNE Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, discussed journalism, media legislation and governance with the governor. Governor Hashmi said local government institutions strengthen democracy and improve public service delivery. He also described the Governor’s office as a public trust and pledged to perform his responsibilities with honesty, transparency and justice.
More than 100 words into the discussion, Press Freedom remained a key focus. Recalling the pledge he made after assuming office, Governor Hashmi said he would remain free from prejudice, dishonesty, injustice, arrogance and pride. He added that he values constructive suggestions from journalists and believes the media plays a vital role in informing the public, promoting awareness and reinforcing democratic values.
The CPNE delegation urged the government to improve Sindh’s motorway network and review the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). Members also called for consultation with journalists, editors and other stakeholders before introducing any new legislation affecting the media sector.
The delegation further highlighted the challenges facing Pakistan’s media industry and urged authorities to adopt practical measures to address them. Governor Hashmi assured participants that the government would carefully consider their recommendations and continue engaging with the media community.
The delegation included Hassan Abbas, Muhammad Arif Baloch, Muneeza Seham, Qazi Asad Abid, Maqsood Yousuf, Muhammad Usman, Abdul Rehman Sami, Hassan Nisar, Mahmood Alam Khalid, Muhammad Kanwar, Mudassar Alam and Basheer Ahmed.
