The Entrepreneurship and Youth Development Society (EYDS) held a media meet in Karachi on September 10 to discuss ways to prevent young people from accessing tobacco and nicotine products.

The session took place under EYDS’s Youth Access Prevention Initiative (YAP). It focused on the role of homes and families in preventing youth access.

Media professionals joined the discussion under the theme “Youth at Home.” The session examined how parents and caregivers can better understand the environments and influences surrounding young people.

The discussion also covered peer and neighbourhood influences. Participants stressed that stronger awareness at home can support early prevention and healthier conversations.

Parents and Caregivers Play Key Role

Shaista Ayesha, Vice President of EYDS, said youth access prevention requires shared responsibility.

“Parents and caregivers can play an important role by staying informed, remaining aware of the environments around young people, and opening constructive conversations,” she said.

She added that families can help address concerns around potential exposure through informed and supportive communication.

The discussion encouraged parents and caregivers to stay engaged with young people without creating fear or blame.

YAP Promotes Wider Prevention Approach

The media meet also outlined the broader approach of the Youth Access Prevention Initiative.

YAP recognises the role of educational institutions and community gatekeepers in creating safer environments for young people. The initiative works across these connected areas while also focusing on the home and family environment.

The Karachi session placed particular emphasis on parents and caregivers. However, speakers noted that effective youth access prevention also requires awareness across schools, communities and other environments.

EYDS Calls for Responsible Media Reporting

Ayesha Zuberi, Programme Manager – YAP, highlighted the importance of responsible communication.

“How we communicate about youth access matters,” she said.

She added that responsible reporting can increase public awareness and encourage informed discussion. It can also help avoid fear, blame and stigma involving young people and their families.

The session therefore encouraged media professionals to use accurate and responsible language when covering issues related to youth access to tobacco and nicotine.

Focus on Awareness Without Stigma

The media meet concluded with a call for accurate, non-sensational reporting on youth access prevention.

Participants discussed how responsible media coverage can improve public understanding. It can also encourage families and communities to focus on prevention.

EYDS said constructive communication remains important for building awareness and supporting prevention-focused conversations around young people.
