Sonam Wangchuk left his protest site in New Delhi on Saturday after police ended his 20-day hunger strike, citing a court order and growing concerns about his health.

The 59-year-old education activist had survived on salt and water while supporting the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), an online satirical movement that calls for education reforms. The group plans to march to India’s parliament on Monday.

Video from the protest site showed police and paramilitary personnel arriving shortly before 7:30am local time. Officers cleared the area, lifted Wangchuk from the stage and placed him in an ambulance.

Protesters tried to stop the operation, but security personnel pushed them back as the ambulance left the site.

Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, confirmed on X that doctors admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital.

She urged medical staff not to give him any oral or intravenous treatment without the consent of his family and the doctors who monitored his health throughout the hunger strike.

Dr Charu Bamba, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, said Wangchuk remained alert and stable.

The doctor said prolonged fasting had left him weak and mildly dehydrated. She added that his vital signs remained stable and that doctors continued to monitor his condition closely.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said officers acted in line with a Delhi High Court order and medical advice.

He said police moved Wangchuk to a government hospital because he needed urgent medical care.

The Delhi High Court directed the federal government on Thursday to monitor Wangchuk’s health regularly and provide treatment whenever necessary.

Despite his deteriorating condition, Wangchuk insisted on joining Monday’s planned march to parliament and refused repeated calls to end his fast.

Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke began an indefinite hunger strike in Wangchuk’s place.

Dipke said the march would continue as planned and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign.

He also claimed police stopped him from leaving a friend’s house after officers arrived on Saturday morning.
