Pakistan fast bowler LPL star Shaheen Shah Afridi will rejoin the Kandy Royals after the franchise secured a place in the 2026 Lanka Premier League playoffs, giving the team a major boost ahead of the knockout stage.

Tournament organisers confirmed on Tuesday that Afridi will return to the squad after leaving the competition earlier under an agreement that allowed him to come back if Kandy qualified for the playoffs. His return follows a rain-affected match between the Jaffna Kings and Dambulla Sixers, which revived the Royals’ hopes of reaching the final stages of the tournament.

Kandy Royals have also strengthened their squad by signing Pakistan internationals Khushdil Shah and Hassan Nawaz for the playoffs. The three Pakistan players replace Moeen Ali, Sediqullah Atal and Brandon McMullen, who have departed the franchise before the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, the Jaffna Kings have made one squad change, with Nishan Madushka leaving the tournament to join national duty. The franchise has named Vishad Randika as his replacement for the remainder of the competition.

The 2026 Lanka Premier League playoffs will begin on Wednesday at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. The opening day will feature the Qualifier between the Jaffna Kings and Galle Gallants, while Kandy Royals will face Colombo KAPS in the Eliminator, where the winner will advance to the next stage of the tournament.

With Afridi back in the squad and two more Pakistan internationals joining the side, Kandy Royals will look to capitalise on their renewed momentum and mount a strong challenge for the LPL championship.
