US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rejected reports that he is considering leaving President Donald Trump’s administration following Republican losses in the midterm elections.
In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said serving Trump until the end of his presidential term had “always been my plan”.
Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, dismissed speculation about his possible departure. “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you,” he told the newspaper.
Rubio has been mentioned as a potential Republican contender for the 2028 presidential election.
Just days before the midterm elections, he appeared alongside Trump at a campaign rally. He briefly addressed the crowd from the podium, drawing attention to his political profile.
However, Rubio declined to discuss his future presidential ambitions during Thursday’s interview.

“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” he said.
He has previously indicated that he would support Vice President JD Vance if Vance decided to seek the Republican presidential nomination. Vance is also viewed as a possible candidate for the 2028 race.
Earlier on Thursday, Bloomberg reported that Rubio was weighing whether to leave the Trump administration following the Republicans’ midterm setbacks.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said Rubio and his advisers were discussing possible options for his future. It also claimed that Rubio had spoken with White House officials about stepping down and had been asked to remain.
The report said no final decision had been made and no departure timetable had been established.
The State Department strongly rejected reports that Rubio was considering leaving his position.
Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs, described the Bloomberg report as “totally made up”.
Johnson also rejected a report by The Independent suggesting that Rubio was preparing a campaign for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination. He called that report “completely baseless fake news”.
Rubio’s comments to The New York Times and the State Department’s response came amid growing speculation about the administration’s future following the midterm election results.
