MacBook Ultra: Apple Rumoured to Launch Premium OLED Laptop by Early 2027

The MacBook Ultra is expected to become Apple’s most significant Mac redesign in years, according to multiple industry reports.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects the laptop to launch between late 2026 and early 2027, although ongoing global memory chip shortages could push the release toward the latter timeframe. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted mass production will begin by the end of 2026.

If launched, it would mark Apple’s first major redesign of its high-end Mac laptop lineup since the 2021 MacBook Pro.

OLED Display and Touchscreen Expected

Reports suggest the MacBook Ultra will become the first Mac to feature an OLED display, replacing the mini-LED technology used in current MacBook Pro models.

The new display is expected to deliver deeper blacks, richer colours, improved brightness and better energy efficiency.

Apple is also rumoured to introduce touchscreen support for the first time on a Mac. The feature would allow users to interact with macOS using touch, the keyboard or the trackpad without changing the traditional clamshell design.

Redesigned macOS and New Camera Design

The laptop is expected to ship with a more touch-friendly version of macOS, featuring larger controls and gesture support similar to the iPad.

Reports also suggest Apple will replace the current display notch with a hole-punch camera and introduce an iPhone-style Dynamic Island, allowing notifications and system alerts to appear around the camera cutout.

Apple is also expected to strengthen the display hinge to improve stability when using touch controls.

Thinner Design with Existing Ports

The MacBook Ultra is expected to feature a thinner and lighter design while retaining popular ports such as MagSafe, HDMI and the SD card slot.

It is likely to be available in 14-inch and 16-inch models with slimmer bezels and slightly larger displays.

M5 Chips Expected at Launch

Despite the major redesign, reports indicate the laptop will launch with the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max processors rather than new-generation chips.

Apple is reportedly developing more advanced M7 Pro and M7 Max processors for a second-generation model expected in late 2027.

The company is also said to be exploring built-in 5G cellular connectivity, although that feature remains unconfirmed.

Premium Pricing Expected

Apple has not announced pricing, but the MacBook Ultra is expected to sit above the current MacBook Pro lineup.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro currently starts at $1,999, while the 16-inch version starts at $2,999, suggesting the new model could carry an even higher price tag.
