Karan Johar Remembers Late Father With Emotional Birthday Tribute

Indian filmmaker Karan Johar remembered his late father, Yash Johar, on his birthday with a heartfelt social media tribute. The filmmaker shared a series of nostalgic photographs and personal memories on Instagram.

“Happy birthday papa, miss you everyday,” Johar wrote alongside the pictures.

Among the memories, Johar recalled buying his first designer jacket after the release of his directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, in 1998. He visited a Burberry store and bought the only jacket that fit him during what he described as his “mega plus-size days.”

Johar said he felt stylish in the new jacket. His father, however, had a very different reaction.

“Son, what is this?” Yash Johar reportedly asked before joking in Punjabi, “Beta yeh Burberry nahi … bohat buri hai.”

Johar said the moment captured his father’s personality perfectly. He described him as “rooted, basic and very, very funny.”

A Father Who Always Believed in His Son

Johar also remembered how strongly his father supported him. Even during periods when he struggled with his weight, Yash Johar continued to praise his appearance.

“ You are so handsome — you become a hero!!” he recalled his father telling him.

The filmmaker’s memories then turned more emotional as he spoke about his father’s final days while undergoing chemotherapy.

Johar recalled that his father once told him after a chemotherapy session that he did not want to leave his family. However, he felt that his life was coming to an end.

His father then gave him advice that Johar has carried with him ever since.

“Just promise me you will always be kind. Success means nothing if you’re not kind,” Johar recalled him saying.

‘When You Lose a Parent, You Gain a God’

Johar ended the tribute by reflecting on the lasting impact of his father’s death.

He said his father left a void in his life more than two decades ago. Johar added that he has never tried to fill that space.

“He is my God,” the filmmaker wrote.

The emotional post drew messages of affection from several Bollywood personalities. Designer Manish Malhotra and actor Kareena Kapoor were among those who expressed their love in the comments.
