Karachi Sanitation came under review on Tuesday as Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi inspected several districts and ordered immediate measures to improve waste management and strengthen the city’s anti-encroachment campaign.

Accompanied by Central District Deputy Commissioner Taha Saleem, the commissioner visited Gulberg Town, New Karachi Town and North Nazimabad Town. Assistant commissioners, officials from the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), Water Corporation, Karachi Development Authority (KDA) and municipal administrations also joined the inspection.

Commissioner orders action on garbage transfer stations

During the visit, Naqvi expressed concern over poor sanitation at the garbage transfer station located near the walls of Public School and Edhi Home.

He directed the Director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board to take immediate action and relocate the transfer station as soon as possible.

Officials also decided that authorities would no longer establish garbage transfer stations on major roads, especially near schools, hospitals and other important public facilities.

Daily inspections to improve cleanliness

The commissioner also inspected roadside garbage collection points in North Nazimabad and New Karachi, where he found sanitation standards unsatisfactory.

He instructed all assistant commissioners to carry out daily inspections in their respective areas and closely monitor cleanliness operations.

Naqvi said poorly maintained garbage collection points inconvenience residents and weaken the government’s efforts to improve sanitation across the city.

He also directed deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners to play a more active role in implementing the government’s cleanliness campaign while addressing other civic and administrative issues.

Waste removal capacity to increase

To speed up waste disposal, officials decided to double the number of dumpers transporting garbage from the New Karachi transfer station to the landfill site.

Authorities also decided to continue waste transportation on Sundays to prevent garbage from piling up and to reduce foul odours in surrounding neighbourhoods.

Anti-encroachment drive to continue

The commissioner also visited Hussainabad in Gulberg Town, where officials reported severe evening traffic congestion caused by pushcarts, roadside stalls and illegal encroachments.

Naqvi instructed the Assistant Commissioner Gulberg to work with the town administration and traffic police to launch an effective anti-encroachment operation.

He said the campaign should ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce inconvenience for commuters.
