A fire broke out near the Karachi Mayor’s office at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) headquarters on MA Jinnah Road on Tuesday.

According to the KMC spokesperson, the fire started in a kitchen on the first floor next to Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s office.

The KMC fire brigade quickly reached the building after receiving information about the incident. Firefighters brought the blaze under control before it could spread further.

Officials confirmed that no one died in the incident. Two fire tenders responded to the emergency.

Fire Damages Mayor’s Office

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab reached the KMC headquarters after the fire and inspected the affected area.

The mayor also received a briefing from the municipal commissioner about the incident.

Speaking to the media, Wahab said the fire started suddenly. He said officials were investigating whether someone caused the fire or whether it started accidentally.

“My room has been burned, but the chamber remained safe,” the mayor said.

He added that firefighters contained the blaze in time.

Wahab also said his office did not contain important records. According to the mayor, staff send documents to the relevant departments after obtaining his signature.

Air Conditioner Under Investigation

The mayor said the fire damaged furniture, walls and doors inside his room.

He also said the fire appeared to have started in the office air conditioner.

Officials will examine the air-conditioning unit to determine the exact cause of the fire.

“Whatever report comes out will be shared with the media,” Wahab said.

The investigation will determine whether an electrical fault or another factor caused the blaze.

No Records Reportedly Lost

The mayor said no official records burned in his room.

He explained that files requiring his signature do not remain in the office permanently. Staff send them to the relevant departments after the signing process.

This reduced concerns about the possible loss of municipal records.

Officials also confirmed that the fire did not cause any loss of life.

Landhi Factory Fire Raises Fresh Concerns

The KMC office fire occurred a day after a major blaze hit a factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

The Landhi fire spread to a nearby factory as firefighters battled intense flames.

Employees evacuated the building safely.

The factory stored a large quantity of second-hand clothing, which added to the intensity of the fire.

Fire brigade teams initially sent two fire tenders to the site. However, the growing blaze forced officials to deploy additional equipment.

Firefighters eventually used 18 fire tenders and two snorkels during the operation.

Factory Partially Collapses During Rescue

Part of the Landhi factory collapsed during the firefighting operation.

Rescue officials later declared the entire building unsafe.

Firefighters continued their efforts for several hours. However, they could not immediately extinguish the entire blaze.

Officials said their teams had prevented the fire from spreading further. They also reported that firefighters had brought around 50% of the blaze under control.

The two incidents have once again highlighted the need for stronger fire safety measures at workplaces and public buildings across Karachi.
