ICE Agents Shoot and Wound Man in New York With 5-Year-Old Child in Car

US immigration agents shot and wounded a man in New York City on Thursday. A five-year-old child was reportedly inside his car during the incident.

The shooting occurred in the Marble Hill neighbourhood, according to the mayor, police and eyewitnesses.

Federal immigration agents have shot at least 21 people since President Donald Trump returned to office. Seven of those shootings were fatal, according to the supplied report.

The incidents have sparked protests across the United States. Critics say Trump’s expanded deportation campaign has increased the risk of violent confrontations. They have also accused his administration of avoiding accountability for agents involved in shootings.

Trump has defended mass deportations. He has repeatedly linked migrants to financial fraud and violent crime.

Mamdani Demands ICE Leave New York City

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and the child before firing multiple rounds.

“I have been on the phone with President Trump and (Homeland Security) Secretary Mullin, negotiating the release of the man ICE agents shot,” Mamdani said at a late-evening press conference.

He added that the negotiations had failed.

Mamdani also called on the Trump administration to stop immigration enforcement operations in New York City. He argued that the actions were making the city less safe.

“This city wants ICE out. We want ICE out of our city, ICE out of our schools, ICE out of our hospitals, ICE out of our streets, ICE away from our kids,” he said.

The mayor confirmed that the child had not suffered physical injuries.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers located the child with a family member after conducting a welfare check.

DHS Says Officers Were Conducting Targeted Operation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said ICE officers were carrying out a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx.

The operation aimed to arrest a 28-year-old man from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction, the department said.

Tisch said the man had been arrested twice in New York City. The arrests reportedly occurred in 2023 and 2025.

DHS said an ICE officer fired a weapon during the incident, injuring the man. Officers then provided immediate medical assistance.

“The individual is alive and at a local hospital,” the department said.

The shooting occurred at around 4pm Eastern Time, or 2000 GMT, according to DHS.

Eyewitness Describes Shooting Scene

Pedro Almarez, who works at a nearby restaurant, said he heard gunshots before going outside.

He told Reuters that several officers wearing ICE clothing were at the scene. Three or four vehicles were also present, he said.

Almarez said New York Police Department officers arrived about 10 minutes later. He added that authorities removed the wounded man from his car after an ambulance arrived.

Police placed yellow crime-scene tape around the affected block.

A woman watching from a nearby balcony shouted at officers. She accused them of “taking our children,” according to the report.

The incident has renewed concerns about federal immigration enforcement and its impact on local communities.
