EU Warns of Possible Russian Sabotage and Attacks

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned that Russia could be planning further sabotage acts and attacks against European democracies.

Kallas made the remarks ahead of an EU defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels on Monday.

She said European intelligence indicated that Russia was planning additional actions aimed at dividing European societies and discouraging support for Ukraine.

“We see in the intelligence that Russia is planning more sabotage acts and attacks against our democracy,” Kallas said.

She said European countries should remain alert and take preventive measures before any potential attacks occur.

EU Ministers to Discuss Hybrid Threats

EU defence ministers are expected to discuss the bloc’s response to hybrid attacks.

The meeting will include discussions on a proposed emergency protocol that could be activated when a threat targets an EU member state.

Kallas said the ministers would also review European defence readiness and continued support for Ukraine.

The security situation in the Middle East will also feature on the agenda.

EU Seeks to Close Defence Gaps

Kallas said European countries had increased investment in defence in recent years.

However, she said significant gaps remained in the bloc’s military capabilities.

The focus should now shift towards addressing those gaps and strengthening Europe’s ability to respond to security threats, she said.

The discussion comes as European governments continue to reassess their defence capabilities amid heightened security concerns.

EU Reviews Operation Aspides

Kallas also highlighted challenges facing the EU’s naval Operation Aspides in the Middle East.

She said the mission needed additional assets, particularly ships capable of escorting commercial vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The EU is expected to discuss whether ships offered to a separate “coalition of the willing” could temporarily support Operation Aspides.

The naval mission has been tasked with protecting shipping and supporting freedom of navigation in the region.

EU defence ministers will also assess the wider security situation and the bloc’s preparedness to respond to emerging threats.
