ECP Sets February 7, 2027, for First Phase of Punjab Local Government Elections

The decision follows a request from the Punjab government to hold the elections after January 20, 2027. The provincial government cited weather conditions and administrative challenges.

In its short written order, the ECP accepted a request submitted by the Punjab chief secretary in the interest of justice. It also directed its secretariat to take the necessary further action.

Punjab Seeks More Time for Election Preparations

During the hearing, Punjab Chief Secretary informed a four-member ECP bench that preparations for the local government elections were complete. However, he requested additional time, saying the provincial administration needed around two months to complete the arrangements.

He explained that dense winter fog, particularly in Lahore, could create difficulties for voters and election staff. According to him, weather conditions generally improve after January 20, making February more suitable for polling.

The chief secretary also pointed to shorter daylight hours during winter. He said these conditions could affect voter participation and election arrangements.

He added that April would have been more convenient for the provincial government because of longer days and school holidays. However, he said January and February were also acceptable.

ECP Questions Earlier Election Schedule

During the proceedings, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja recalled an earlier proposal from the Punjab government. Following consultations between the provincial cabinet committee and the ECP, the government had suggested holding elections between December 15 and January 15.

An ECP member also questioned why the provincial government had previously preferred April polling.

The chief election commissioner said the commission would consider the request for a date after January 20 before announcing its decision.

Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq, the provincial chief secretary and the secretary of the Local Government Commission also attended the hearing.

The ECP reiterated its responsibility to ensure transparent, fair and lawful elections. It also stressed the need to provide a level playing field to all contestants.
