Dumlottee-DHA Water Pipeline Project Breaks Ground in Karachi

KARACHI, September 29, 2026: The groundbreaking ceremony for the Dumlottee-DHA Water Pipeline Project was held in Karachi on Tuesday.

Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Member of the National Assembly from NA-241 Karachi, attended the ceremony.

Baig said the project could help move DHA towards becoming a tanker-free area.

He said he had raised the proposal after the February 2024 elections and presented the PC-1 for a dedicated Dumlottee-DHA pipeline.

The project is expected to provide an additional 10 million gallons of water per day to residents of DHA and Clifton.

Rs14.23 Billion Project to Be Completed in 15 Months

Baig thanked federal and provincial officials and other stakeholders for supporting the project.

He acknowledged PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah.

He also thanked Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and officials of the Cantonment Board Clifton.

Baig also acknowledged Station Commander CBC Brigadier Imran Asghar and Project Director Brigadier Adnan Akhtar Ali.

He appreciated the management of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) for pursuing the project.

The revised cost of the project stands at Rs14.23 billion.

Baig said the agreement between KW&SC and the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) had been signed.

He proposed a monitoring committee comprising prominent residents of DHA and Clifton.

The committee would monitor progress during the project’s expected 15-month construction period.

Water to Come From Keenjhar Lake

Baig clarified that the project’s water source would be Keenjhar Lake.

He said the supply would not come from Dumlottee wells.

Water supplied through the project is expected to be sold to residents at 70 paisa per gallon.

Baig said the rate could provide significant relief to residents currently spending heavily on water supplies.

The project is intended to reduce dependence on private water tankers in DHA and Clifton.

K-4 Project to Address Karachi Water Shortfall

Baig also discussed Karachi’s wider water supply requirements.

He said Karachi currently needs around 1,200 million gallons per day (MGD) but receives only about 550 MGD.

This leaves a shortfall of approximately 650 MGD, which he said would be addressed through the K-4 water supply project.

Baig said he was working with the federal government on the K-4 project.

He also raised the issue during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs on September 21.

The meeting was chaired by Baig.

The K-4 project is expected to play a major role in addressing Karachi’s long-term water requirements.
