DNC Sues Trump Over Taxpayer-Funded TV Ads

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) sued US President Donald Trump on Wednesday over taxpayer-funded television ads.

The DNC asked a federal court in Washington to block the administration from using public money for the ads.

DNC Challenges Use of Public Funds

The lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of violating a law that restricts government spending on publicity or propaganda.

The ads began airing in late September. They feature Trump and promote his message ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump said on Truth Social on Monday that taxpayers would no longer fund the ads. The White House later said his MAGA PAC would pay for future broadcasts.

Ads Continued After Trump Statement

The DNC said the ads continued after Trump announced the funding change.

The spots aired during football games as recently as Sunday. They also appeared during other television programs.

The New York Times reported that Trump personally directed the White House budget director to use taxpayer money for the ads, citing sources. Reuters has also reported on the continued broadcasts.

One ad shows Trump saying that America will never become a communist country. Another uses Mount Rushmore images alongside Trump’s comments about an American “golden age.”

A newer ad also features ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Government Funding Faces Legal Challenge

The DNC said millions of dollars allocated for the ads remained unspent.

“With less than 30 days remaining before the midterm election,” the party said it had no choice but to seek court action.

The White House said Trump’s political action committee would fund future ads. It also said the PAC would not reimburse taxpayers for ads already aired.

The ads carry a disclaimer stating that the US government paid for them.
