Legendary singer Billy Joel has revealed that he cannot currently drive or perform live as he continues to manage normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition he was diagnosed with in 2025.
The 77-year-old musician shared the update in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on October 15, 2026. He explained that he must undergo further medical tests before doctors can determine whether he can return to the stage.
“I’m not allowed to drive,” Joel said.
The singer also revealed plans to auction more than 70 motorcycles from his collection. His health condition has made riding increasingly difficult and potentially unsafe.
Joel said he had accumulated more than 100 motorcycles over the years. However, his age and health challenges have prompted him to reconsider the collection.

“I ended up having over a hundred motorcycles, and the truth is you can only ride one at a time,” the “Uptown Girl” singer said. “I’m into my 70s now, and I realized I can’t ride as much as I used to.”
He explained that NPH had also affected his confidence behind the wheel.
Joel said the condition “makes driving a little bit iffy”. As a result, he decided to pass his motorcycles on to other owners.
Meanwhile, Joel explained why he cannot currently perform concerts. He said his neurologist had warned him that live shows could place additional strain on his condition.
“Rock and roll is loud, man,” he said.
The singer pointed to the intensity of live performances, including the lighting, sound, stress and physical energy involved. Therefore, he is waiting for further medical assessments before deciding whether he can return to performing.
Joel cancelled his remaining tour dates in May 2025 following his diagnosis. He had also postponed earlier performances after suffering a fall during a show.
Last month, Joel revealed that he had undergone brain surgery involving the implantation of a shunt. He said the procedure improved his memory, balance and overall ability to function.
However, his recovery remains ongoing. He continues to attend physical therapy and follow medical advice as he manages the condition.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain’s ventricles. It can affect walking, balance, bladder control and cognitive function. Treatment may involve a shunt that helps drain excess fluid.
Despite the challenges, Joel reassured fans that he remains determined to continue his recovery.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m still here,” he said.
