AKU Pediatrics received a major boost on Thursday as the Aga Khan University (AKU) launched the AKU Manual of Pediatrics, a free digital clinical resource designed to improve the diagnosis and management of childhood illnesses across Pakistan. Developed by clinicians for clinicians, the manual provides practical, evidence-based guidance tailored to the country’s healthcare needs.

The launch took place in Karachi and was attended by Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Syed Mustafa Kamal, who praised the initiative as an important contribution to strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare system. AKU Pediatrics aims to equip pediatricians, family physicians, medical officers, residents and other healthcare professionals with reliable point-of-care clinical guidance.
The manual has been developed by AKU’s Centre for Clinical Best Practices in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. It includes 88 evidence-based clinical practice guidelines covering 14 pediatric subspecialties, offering healthcare providers quick access to standardized recommendations based on international evidence and local clinical realities.
Speaking at the launch, Syed Mustafa Kamal said strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare system requires practical, evidence-based solutions that help medical professionals deliver better patient care. He commended Aga Khan University for producing a valuable resource that promotes consistency and quality in child healthcare.
The ceremony brought together senior representatives from government institutions, academic organisations and professional healthcare bodies, including the Pakistan Pediatric Association (PPA), Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute (AFPGMI) and the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN).
The manual’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Adil H. Haider, former Dean of AKU Medical College, said the publication was designed to provide healthcare workers with practical bedside guidance that reflects Pakistan’s unique healthcare environment.
AKU President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin said the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to placing trusted medical knowledge in the hands of professionals caring for children.
“When clinical decisions are guided by evidence, informed by global science and rooted in local realities, we move closer to a healthcare system where every child has a fairer chance at life and health,” he said.
Chair of AKU’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Prof Dr Fyezah Jehan, said while medical science is universal, its application must reflect local realities. She described the manual as an important step toward adapting global evidence for Pakistan’s healthcare system.
The launch also featured keynote speeches and a panel discussion highlighting the importance of locally developed clinical guidelines in improving pediatric care and health outcomes.
The AKU Manual of Pediatrics is available free of charge through the university’s website and dedicated mobile applications for both Android and iOS users.
