Philippines School Shooting: Student Kills Classmate Before Taking His Own Life

Philippines school shooting has left two students dead after a ninth-grade student allegedly shot a schoolmate at a private university in western Mindanao before taking his own life, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident occurred at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a Catholic educational institution in Zamboanga City.

Regional police spokeswoman Shella Chang said the suspect entered the classroom of the victim and shot them before going to the fifth floor, where he shot himself.

Shooting livestreamed online

Interior Secretary Victor Remulla confirmed that the student livestreamed the incident on social media.

The suspect’s Facebook account has since been disabled.

Local media circulated footage that appeared to show a gun being carried through a school hallway before shots were fired inside a classroom. Students in school uniforms could be seen fleeing the area.

Authorities had not immediately confirmed whether anyone else was injured.

Police were investigating the motive and examining how the firearm entered the school.

They were also working to determine who owned the weapon and where it came from.

School expresses shock

Ateneo de Zamboanga president Father Guillrey Andal confirmed the two deaths and said the school was cooperating with authorities.

He said the institution was working with police to identify the victims and contact their families.

The shooting caused significant concern among students, staff and parents, school officials said.

The university had also conducted active-shooter preparedness activities following a deadly school attack elsewhere in the country.

Second deadly school attack in two months

School shootings remain relatively uncommon in the Philippines.

However, three teenage students were killed and 20 others injured in a school attack in the central Philippines in June.

The incident prompted schools across the country to strengthen security measures and conduct emergency response drills.

Ateneo de Zamboanga was among the institutions that conducted active-shooter drills last month.

Authorities are now investigating the latest attack, including the source of the firearm and the circumstances that led to the shooting.
