Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched a nationwide initiative to provide 500,000 Chromebooks and internet facilities to talented students across Pakistan over the next two years.
The programme will cover students enrolled in schools and religious seminaries. It aims to expand access to digital education and equip young people with modern technology and essential digital skills.
Addressing the launch ceremony, Shehbaz said the initiative would help Pakistani students compete internationally. He stressed that financial circumstances should not limit a student’s talent or potential.
He also described access to modern technology as a shared responsibility.
Under the initiative, authorities will distribute Chromebooks strictly on merit. Each selected student will also receive a school bag and an internet device to support digital learning.

As a result, students will be able to access online educational resources and electronic libraries from home. The programme aims to extend learning opportunities beyond traditional classrooms.
The prime minister expressed hope that the initiative would help students pursue higher education, improve their digital skills and secure dignified employment.
Shehbaz recalled that the government had distributed 600,000 laptops to students on merit over the past decade. He said the programme began during former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s tenure.
He also praised the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation for contributing to the Chromebook initiative. In addition, he acknowledged overseas Pakistanis who donated towards education and the digital development of young people.
The prime minister described overseas Pakistani youth as a valuable national asset and a source of future progress.
Highlighting other government education initiatives, Shehbaz said Danish Schools provide free education, accommodation and meals to students.
These institutions also offer modern learning facilities, including smart boards and electronic libraries. Furthermore, he said authorities were building 27 Danish Schools across the country.
The prime minister added that students from religious seminaries had also benefited from previous laptop distribution schemes.
Shehbaz said providing students with the resources to develop their abilities remained a government priority.
Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted that laptops helped students continue their education during school closures. They also enabled people to pursue employment opportunities during difficult circumstances.
Addressing students at the ceremony, the prime minister emphasised the importance of education in personal development and social progress.
He expressed hope that the new Chromebook initiative would open more opportunities for young people and help them contribute to Pakistan’s development.
