Asim Munir Vows to Intensify Campaign Against Militants During Peshawar Visit

Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir has vowed to intensify operations against what the military described as “Indian-sponsored terrorist outfits,” pledging to target them wherever they operate.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Munir visited Corps Headquarters in Peshawar, where the Commander Peshawar Corps received him.

During the visit, military officials briefed him on the prevailing security situation, ongoing counter-terrorism operations, border management measures and the operational readiness of formations deployed across the province.

Army Chief Calls for High Operational Readiness

ISPR said Munir praised the morale and professionalism of officers and troops. He also directed them to remain vigilant and maintain the highest standards of operational readiness to counter security threats.

“He underscored that we would continue the campaign against Indian sponsored terrorist outfits to the fullest and hit them hard wherever they are,” the military’s media wing said.

Munir also paid tribute to the sacrifices of the Pakistani people, including security personnel who had been martyred or wounded during operations.

“With the support of the people, Pakistan would surely inflict total defeat to the terrorists and their perverted ideology,” ISPR quoted him as saying.

The military statement did not provide further operational details about the ongoing campaign.

Visit Follows Federal Apex Committee Meeting

Munir arrived in Peshawar a day earlier to attend a meeting of the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the meeting on Thursday.

Participants reviewed the security situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). The government also reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and accelerating development in the province.

During the meeting, Shehbaz defended the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in K-P. He said the deteriorating security situation had necessitated the measures and pledged to restore peace, prosperity and development.

The prime minister maintained that the Constitution and law empowered the government to take the steps implemented in the province. He also thanked coalition partners for supporting the decision, particularly President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif.

K-P Faces Rising Security Challenges

The visit comes amid renewed militant violence in K-P. Security assessments presented to the federal cabinet indicated that terrorist incidents in the province increased by 195 per cent between March 2024 and September 2026.

Police officers and other security personnel have borne the brunt of many attacks, according to the assessments cited in the source report.

On Thursday, four police personnel, including a Counter-Terrorism Department deputy superintendent of police, were martyred during an exchange of fire with armed men in Karak.

In a separate incident in Bannu, a remote-controlled bomb explosion injured two civilians.

The latest incidents have added to security concerns in the province as authorities continue counter-terrorism operations and review measures to improve law and order.
