BYD Shark 6 Earns Five-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating

BYD’s Shark 6 DMO pickup has earned a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. The independent vehicle safety organisation assessed the pickup across several key categories.

The results highlight its performance in occupant protection, road user safety and driver assistance. They also strengthen the model’s safety credentials as BYD expands its global new-energy vehicle range.

Euro NCAP describes its five-star rating as “overall excellent performance in crash protection and well equipped with state-of-the-art crash avoidance technology”.

Strong Scores in Occupant Protection

The BYD Shark 6 scored 82% for adult occupant protection and 86% for child occupant protection.

According to BYD, the assessment draws on tests conducted by Australasian safety organisation ANCAP last year. Euro NCAP also carried out additional evaluations.

The pickup performed well in the frontal-offset test. It also delivered good results in full-width rigid barrier and side barrier assessments.

Euro NCAP highlighted the protection offered to test dummies representing six- and 10-year-old children during a side barrier impact.

The assessment also recognised the vehicle’s child presence detection system. This feature warns drivers when it detects that a child may have been left inside the vehicle.

Driver Assistance and Road User Protection

The Shark 6 achieved 74% in the Vulnerable Road Users category. Its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests involving cyclists.

The system also responded effectively to motorcyclists, according to the assessment. These features can help drivers respond to potential hazards on the road.

In the Safety Assist category, the pickup scored 87%. Euro NCAP credited its AEB performance in scenarios involving other vehicles.

The assessment also recognised the vehicle’s lane-departure support and speed assistance systems. The latter can automatically set the speed limiter based on recognised local speed limits.

Together, these technologies aim to support drivers and reduce the risk of certain collisions.

BYD Highlights Engineering and Innovation

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said the rating reflects the company’s focus on developing technology that benefits customers.

“BYD is a technology company, and our 120,000 R&D engineers are constantly striving to find the next innovation that can improve people’s lives,” Li said.

She described the company’s ability to turn research into practical products as a key strength.

“The BYD SHARK 6’s Euro NCAP result is further proof of how our engineering and electronics skills can come together to achieve this,” Li added.

Li also highlighted the pickup’s versatility. She described it as a capable work vehicle with SUV-like comfort and off-road performance.

According to her statement, the Shark 6 can travel up to 90 kilometres using electric power alone.

Li said the model would play an important role in BYD’s global lineup. She also expressed confidence that it would help encourage wider adoption of new-energy vehicles.

The five-star rating adds to the Shark 6’s safety credentials as BYD continues to expand its international range of electrified vehicles.
