The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has uncovered a wealth statement fraud involving Rs9.41 billion in unexplained assets.
FBR has registered a criminal case under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010. The tax authority is also processing further cases.
The Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) detected the fraud through an analysis of FBR data.
Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) supported the analysis. The review identified 85 taxpayers who made suspicious wealth statement revisions.
These taxpayers revised wealth statements between March 2025 and June 2026. They changed statements for tax years 2014 to 2019.
The revisions added assets that taxpayers had never declared. The assets included cash, physical gold, prize bonds, properties and business capital.
The Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, limits wealth statement revisions to five years from the due date of the original return.
FBR said all the identified taxpayers revised their statements after this legal deadline.

According to the tax authority, taxpayers used the revisions to add previously unexplained assets to their declared wealth.
The Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) Lahore registered one case in the investigation.
According to FBR, a Lahore taxpayer revised a tax year 2015 wealth statement in May 2026. The taxpayer added fictitious funds worth Rs102.8 million.
He then carried the amount through his wealth statements up to tax year 2025.
The taxpayer later bought seven properties in May and June 2026. The properties had a combined value of Rs64.41 million.
FBR said the taxpayer could not explain the source of the funds. The tax authority estimates the tax evasion in the case at more than Rs46 million.
Regional Directorates of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) have launched 48 criminal inquiries across Pakistan.
Officials are also processing the remaining cases. FBR has registered a money laundering case against the taxpayer and any abettors involved in the alleged fraud.
The department said it will process additional cases as investigations progress.
FBR said its data analytics teams will continue monitoring the tax system for manipulation.
The tax authority warned that people involved in such activity could face penalties and prosecution under the law.
