Madonna dominated the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, winning seven trophies at Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles.
The singer won Artist of the Year, along with Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter.
She also won Best Dance, Best Album, Best Long Form Video, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography for her Confessions II project.
The seven awards marked Madonna’s first VMA wins since 1999. Her previous victory came with “Beautiful Stranger”, which gave her 20th VMA win that year.
Madonna also made her first VMA performance appearance in 23 years.
She opened the ceremony with a performance featuring Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.
Carpenter joined her for “Bring Your Love”, while Charli XCX appeared for “Danceteria Afterhours”, a remix of Madonna’s “Danceteria” from Confessions II.

The performance marked Madonna’s return to the VMAs after her 2003 appearance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
While accepting the Artist of the Year award, Madonna reflected on the work behind her latest music.
“I spent the last year and a half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music that I wanted to make,” she said.
She added that this was her definition of being an artist.
Madonna’s latest VMA success follows the release of her 2026 album Confessions II, a sequel to her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor.
The album also won the Best Album award at the ceremony.
Madonna entered the ceremony with the most nominations.
Official pre-show materials initially listed her with 11 nominations, while later coverage reported 13 nominations following changes to the awards lineup.
She received nominations across major categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Dance.
Her Confessions II – The Film also received several nominations for its visual work.
The project ultimately collected multiple awards during the ceremony.
Madonna has been closely associated with the MTV VMAs since the ceremony’s early years.
She performed “Like a Virgin” at the inaugural ceremony in 1984.
Her 2003 appearance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera became another memorable moment in VMA history.
Her latest return adds another chapter to that long association.
The 2026 ceremony was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and was hosted by Snoop Dogg.
Madonna’s seven awards made her the ceremony’s leading winner, while Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia”.
