Widow’s Bay dominated the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, winning a record 14 Emmys for a comedy in a single season.
The Apple TV series won Outstanding Comedy Series on Monday night. The horror comedy follows a New England island community facing a centuries-old curse and strange events.
The Pitt also repeated its success by winning Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive year. The Television Academy said it became the first series since Mad Men to win the drama award for its first two seasons.
Widow’s Bay collected six awards during the televised ceremony. It had already won eight awards during the Creative Arts Emmys.
Its total of 14 awards surpassed the previous comedy record of 13, set by Apple TV’s The Studio last year.
The show also won awards for acting, writing, directing and supporting performances.
Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Widow’s Bay.
Stephen Root won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, while Kate O’Flynn took the supporting actress award.
Katie Dippold won for comedy writing, and Hiro Murai won for comedy directing. Murai became the first Asian director to win in that category, according to the Television Academy.
The Pitt secured another major victory with its second consecutive Outstanding Drama Series award.

Noah Wyle also repeated his success. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
The Television Academy said Wyle became the first actor since Bryan Cranston to win the lead drama acting award for a series’ first two seasons.
The medical drama follows staff working through intense conditions in a Pittsburgh emergency department.
Rhys had one of the biggest individual nights at the ceremony.
He won two lead acting awards in different categories. Along with his comedy acting award for Widow’s Bay, he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s The Beast in Me.
The Television Academy said Rhys became the first performer to win lead acting Emmys in the drama, comedy and limited-series categories.
He previously won an Emmy for The Americans in 2018.
Jean Smart won another Emmy for Hacks, adding to her record of awards for playing comedian Deborah Vance.
The victory made Smart the first performer to win an Emmy for every season of the same series.
She also joined Allison Janney, Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus among performers with eight career acting Emmys.
Janney won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award for The Diplomat.
Pluribus star Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series in its final season. The programme had been cancelled by CBS and aired its final episode this year.
The Television Academy’s members selected the Emmy winners. Its membership includes writers, directors, performers, producers and other television professionals.
The academy also honoured Michael J. Fox with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
Fox received the award for his advocacy and fundraising efforts for Parkinson’s disease research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Speaking from a wheelchair, Fox thanked the entertainment industry for supporting him during his career and after his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay hosted the ceremony.
The event was broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
A pre-recorded sketch also featured Taylor Swift. The segment joked about whether Swift would attend the ceremony after receiving an Emmy nomination for a concert film.
Swift appeared as a rookie detective alongside Hargitay’s Olivia Benson character.
